What are your reasons for not telling people you smoke?
No one in my family smokes, and I'd feel like I was letting them down if they knew I smoke. That's part of why no one at all knows - once you let some people know, it would get hard to live a "double life".
Also, I don't really think of myself as a smoker yet, even though I smoke almost every day and I'm probably addicted. I guess if I went public, that would confirm me as a smoker.

Not wrong, and being able to smoke openly in any place would allow you to smoke more, and to become addicted! I told two people I was smoking, and enjoy sharing smokes with them. But if I don't tell everyone is because some friends would be against.
I don't want to tell my parents, even if they both smoke, because they're convinced I don't, and I'm afraid of their reaction if they knew.

I have a smoking fetish and in addition to enjoying watching women smoke I get aroused when I smoke myself. That prevents me from smoking openly; it would probably go away if I did, though, but I don't want to lose it because I like it.  |

Speaking from experience, it is truly liberating to go public and smoke openly. For me there came a point when I realized that I was hooked and the desire for a cigarette became strong enough that I didn't care if people knew I smoked. It was really nice not having to wait until I was alone to smoke, and even better not having to worry about the smell of smoke on my clothes or my breath.
I think a big part of going public is accepting oneself as a smoker and realizing that most people will accept it without making a fuss. I still feel bad lighting up around non-smokers however, and hate dealing with the anti's.

It's weird, but I feel quite hard to smoke with others, even if they know I smoke. I think I dread the reactions if I light up (even if I'd like to). Yesterday again I was with smoking friends and felt uncomfortable lighting up as I'm used to do it on my own.

I'm pretty much with closetsmoker84 here. I enjoy watching myself smoke, so have a mirror with me as much as possible when smoking, also it does arouse me when I smoke myself, I think goiing public would spoil this. The only exception is on busses(!) In this region of the UK, the busses are actually completely non-smoking, however, everyone smokes upstairs. If I'm fortunate enough to be on my own on the top deck of a bus, then I love to smoke, I suppose it's kind of a 'buzz' too, the smoking in a public place, but still secretly. The other exception, is if I'm on the top deck of a bus, and theres minimal people up there (obviously, if theres anyone who even slightly knows me then it's out of the question), but if a nice youg lady lights up in the afore-mentioned situation, and I'm sat a couple of seats behind her, then I love to light up too, and smoke while watching her smoke |

SKmentholUK - where do you live!!! The upstairs on buses was my favourite, a captivated gallery of pleasure. Where I am, no-one excpet the odd tramp or drunk smokes upstairs  The trains and long distance coaches were the best. Often found my self in the company of cute women smokers, but only a few trains still have smoking sections, and not the ones I use. Where's that Tardis ;D |

I smoke, and it is getting much harder to hide it. Just this year have I started to smoke in the public but I still am a bit sub conscious about it. I enjoy it a lot, and I probably will reach a point where I would not care what people think if they see me smoke for the first time. I'm sure as my addiction takes over my body more and more rapidly, it will become a easy decision to smoke in public.

I'm with the other two i love smoking alone partly cos it arouses me and partly cos i dont want ppl to kno i smoke. Only time i smoke with others is if i'm with a female smoker cos watching them makes me need one hence most of my female mates know i smoke.

I was only private about it until I couldn't anymore. 2 cigarettes became 4 became 8...Unfortunately as the urge took me to smoke, I needed to light up where I could and it took me outside to the smoking areas. It was strange to be with other smoker's who seemed so smooth about it...kinda weird for me...but after time you just become a smoker for real and I've never tried to quit yet..but I'm at a pack and half now and it is hard
