One observation regarding these posts:
There is a fuzzy line between really loving cigarettes and being addicted to them. I think most of us to some degree are addicted to them. We may be able to stop for awhile, but we really really look forward to starting again. We crave them, yet we know they are bad for us. I'm not sure how strong a craving needs to be to be considered an addiction. Is it just a matter of words or something significant? I don't know.
What I do know is that it is a math equation we all face: are the perceived pleasures of smoking worth the health risks and social costs? By keeping it in the closet, we are minimizing the social costs. Keeping our smoking down to only when we can hide it from our friends and loved ones reduces the harm a little, too. I won't be coming out in the near future.
But will I quit? The chances are probably higher that will happen - at least, I lie to myself that I will, but chances are that I won't quit either.
